Current status
Article pages show Adsterra banner ads (near the top of the article, in the sidebar, and between sections on phones) and one Adsterra Native Banner at the end of the article. The Native Banner loads as you read and approach its slot. The home pages also show up to two Adsterra banner ads at section breaks (before the theme list and near the bottom, before the newsletter). They are never placed inside the latest-articles list, article cards or menus.
Google AdSense is in preparation for re-review. The code for ownership verification is installed, but no AdSense ad units are shown in articles.
How ads are displayed
Whenever ads are shown, they are labeled “Ad” or similar and kept distinct from article text, menus and download buttons. No wording that encourages you to click ads is used.
Ads that open a new tab just by opening the page, full-screen ads and push notification ads are not used.
Relationship to the articles
Article conclusions, ratings and ordering are never changed because of ad rates, click counts or relationships with advertisers. When ads or sponsored content are published, the relationship is clearly disclosed.
Affiliate links
Some articles contain affiliate links. If you buy or sign up through one, the operator may receive a commission from the merchant or the affiliate network. The price you pay does not change.
Products and services are chosen and described by the operator based on actual experience and research. Whether there is a commission, or how large it is, never changes a recommendation or rating.
Affiliate services we use
Japanese articles use ValueCommerce LinkSwitch, and articles in English and the other languages use the Awin MasterTag. Both load after the article has finished displaying and turn links to partnered advertisers into affiliate links. They are not loaded if your browser sends Global Privacy Control (GPC) or if you have turned off ads.
Pages that use them carry a label such as “Disclosure” or “PR” near the top of the article. Only when it is closely related to the article, one labeled recommendation box may appear at the end of the article.
How advertising is disclosed
Pages that contain affiliate links or sponsored content carry a label such as “Ad” or “PR” in a visible place near the top of the article, following Japan's stealth marketing rules under the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations and the U.S. FTC Endorsement Guides.
Ad slots are labeled and kept separate from article text. If you find a page where a label is missing, please let us know through the contact form.
Book suggestions
Some research articles end with “Books to go deeper into this research”, at most two books. We list only books written by authors of the studies the article cites, or books the article names, and check the ISBN and author against bibliographic databases (openBD, Open Library). No prices, stock or ratings are shown.
Amazon links become affiliate links only on marketplaces where we have set an Amazon Associates tag; the marketplace’s required disclosure is then shown in the article and on this page. On Japanese articles, a Yahoo! Shopping ISBN search link may be converted by ValueCommerce LinkSwitch, and the section is then labelled as an ad.
Book links are never included in social media posts, email newsletters or audio versions.
Sponsors, partners and reader support
Content connected to an advertiser or provider, such as sponsorship, coverage or a tie-up, carries a label such as "Sponsored" or "PR". The terms are on Partnerships and placements.
If we start accepting reader support (optional payments), a single line with a link appears at the end of articles. Support is voluntary, comes with no extra service or perk, and has no influence on what we write. We do not use pop-ups or anything fixed to the screen.
