Someone screams. Rain makes a ridiculous face. Another character takes the nonsense and raises it. In Chii Fuyo, asking for a sensible adult can feel like asking a circus for a quiet room.
Then Chapter 65 drops an unexpectedly painful piece of context: Rain's (also spelled Rein) habit of acting silly began with a child who wanted his father to notice him.
Excuse me? I thought we were watching a professional nuisance. Why is his origin story making my chest hurt?
He wanted to be seen, not applauded
The important point isn't that young Rain loved a good joke. His father's attention was scarce. Rain tried to draw a reaction, even by imitating a dog. The behavior that could briefly make him visible became an enduring habit of clowning around.
Children fool around. That alone isn't tragic. But there's a difference between making a joke because it's fun and making yourself the joke because being yourself isn't getting noticed.
A clown is supposed to make the audience laugh. Rain was looking for an audience of one.
How did nobody notice? Look at everybody else
This is also a comic where the surrounding cast regularly behaves as if shouting “AAAAH!” is a normal conversational option. Rain isn't the sole licensed lunatic. Against that background, his antics simply blend into the wallpaper.
Prince Dura's insight matters here. He looks past the noise and distinguishes carefree fooling around from putting on a playful act to reach someone. Suddenly, an old running gag comes with an uncomfortable question: was Rain trying to entertain people, or make sure they wouldn't look away?
That doesn't mean every joke is secretly fake, or that his real personality is a gloomy mask underneath. A learned habit can become a genuine part of someone. Some of Rain's nonsense is surely just nonsense. Nobody needs to turn every funny face into a diagnosis.
The same habit helps other people—and trips him up
Rain's irreverence can loosen an atmosphere that grief or fear has frozen solid. He meets people with painful histories without treating them only as collections of wounds. That fits the official series description: someone who accepts companions who have lost their place in the world.
But there is a cost. Defusing every serious moment with a joke can become a way of dodging difficult decisions. Sometimes a friend needs less comedy and more honesty.
Chapter 65 is effective because it doesn't simply pardon Rain's annoying behavior with a sad flashback. His clowning is both a bridge to other people and a habit that can hold him back.
A man who can add absurd enhancement points to equipment has spent years trying to earn his own worth with a performance. Ouch.
Keep the jokes. Lose the need to audition for love.
If Rain became solemn forever, Chii Fuyo would probably collapse under the weight of its own silence. The hopeful reading is not that he must stop being funny.
It's that the boy who performed to be noticed may finally have companions who will stay even when he isn't performing.
And yes, somebody will probably scream again two panels later. This is still Chii Fuyo.
