Description: Ever Crisis closed in October 2026, just as some fans finally had a new way to encounter Before Crisis. Here's what the shutdown means for that story and why players want it preserved.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis ended service on October 6 at 11 p.m. PDT, or October 7 at 3 p.m. in Japan. Its story chapters are no longer accessible through the live game. Square Enix's shutdown notice does not lay out a replacement story viewer or a standalone edition.

A second chance at a famously hard-to-play chapter

Before Crisis was originally released for Japanese feature phones, long before an international audience could simply download a copy. For many FFVII followers, Ever Crisis offered an unusual opportunity to experience a retelling of that corner of the series. This wasn't just another limited-time event: it was a rare window into a part of the Compilation that had been difficult to reach.

That is why the timing stings. In the community's shutdown megathread, some players said Before Crisis was what kept them interested. Another reacted with frustration at the prospect of finally getting that story, only for the whole game to close. Other commenters hoped someone would record the story chapters before they vanished from the app. These are individual reactions, not an official preservation project.

What the announcement settles

Square Enix announced the closure in July. Its Japanese and English pages give different calendar dates because they use different time zones, not because one region was promised an extra day of play. The company said story and event releases would continue until shutdown. It did not describe how players might revisit those chapters afterward.

Fans have suggested an offline edition, recordings, or eventually bringing the material to another release. Those ideas explain what people hope for; they are not available replacement products. Watching a recording could preserve scenes, but it would not reproduce the original act of navigating the game.

The real loss is access to a piece of FFVII history

When an ordinary online game closes, players lose their routine. With Before Crisis, there is a second worry: a story that was already hard to access has become hard to access again. The next useful news would be a clear announcement about official archives, a standalone release, or future re-use of the story. Until then, the date of closure is certain; the future home of these scenes remains the question worth asking.
