Spoiler warning: This covers Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway (Hathaway's Flash) up to the end of the first film. From the second film it only uses the character details you need.
Watch Hathaway for the first time and you'll probably think:
"Wait. Whose side is this guy on right now?"
That's not you being slow. The hero is the leader of an anti-government group, yet he sits down to eat with the enemy commander, chats with him, and earns his trust. And that commander is busy arresting the hero's own people.
Gigi is hanging around too, and she doesn't wear either side's uniform.
It looks like a giant-robot movie, but the first half plays a lot more like a spy thriller.
1. Just remember three groups first: the Federation, Mafty, and Gigi
On a first watch, don't bother with ranks and job titles. Three groups are enough.
Earth Federation: Kenneth, Lane, and the Federation military.
Mafty: Hathaway, Gawman, Emeralda, Mihessia, and the rest of the crew.
Gigi: she doesn't officially belong to either group, and she keeps stirring up how everyone relates to everyone else.
The official story describes Mafty as a movement against the Earth Federation government that fights by assassinating its ministers, and it says Hathaway is the real leader.[1][2]
So Hathaway isn't really "a Federation spy." He's the head of an anti-government group, hiding who he is while he stands right next to the enemy commander.
No wonder it's confusing.
2. "We caught one of Mafty's men" while Mafty himself is standing right there
The scene where Gawman is marched in as a prisoner explains Hathaway's double life in one shot.
Gawman is a veteran Mafty mobile suit pilot. Hathaway is Mafty's leader.[2][3]
And yet the scene basically goes:
Federation: "We caught a Mafty guy."
Hathaway: "Is that so."
Gawman: "...my boss is standing right there."
Gawman glances at Hathaway for a second and says nothing. That one look tells you they know each other, and that one wrong reaction would finish everyone.
Think of an employee being hauled into a police station who spots the boss of a criminal gang laughing it up with the police chief.
Forget loyalty. It's just painfully awkward.
3. Bright and Amuro are both Federation, yet Bright's son runs an anti-Federation group
The family tree makes it weirder.
Hathaway's father, Bright Noa, is a Federation officer who fought in the One Year War alongside Amuro Ray. The official material goes out of its way to stress that bloodline.[1][2]
Put roughly:
Amuro: Federation side
Bright: Federation side
Bright's son Hathaway: leader of the anti-government movement
His followers have to trust the son of a famous Federation officer. They do, because Hathaway isn't just a rebellious kid mouthing off. He actually leads Mafty's operations and fights in the Xi Gundam himself.[2]
If you remember Ohgi from Code Geass, you might joke, "Isn't this group going to get betrayed from the inside?" But at least in the first film, Mafty is a group where a captured veteran sees his boss and doesn't give him up.
4. Why Gigi gives off such strong "main heroine" energy
Gigi is young, blonde, dressed nothing like the soldiers, and not part of any military chain of command. Next to the other women, she simply looks more like "the heroine."
Her official profile calls her a beautiful girl who charms the men around her, shows an insight close to foresight, and draws the interest of both Hathaway and Kenneth.[4]
Emeralda, the red-haired one, is a front-line member of Mafty's mobile suit unit.[3]
Their roles are totally different:
Emeralda: someone doing a job inside the organization.
Gigi: someone outside the org chart who bends the paths of two men.
Of course Gigi is the one you notice.
5. It seems like everyone is a cool-headed man, but Hathaway is different underneath
Kenneth is a Federation colonel and former mobile suit pilot who also fought in Char's Rebellion. Now he commands the unit hunting down Mafty.[5]
Gawman is a battle-hardened veteran too.[3]
It makes sense that these two stay calm when things get ugly.
Hathaway is the odd one. On the surface he looks just as calm as Kenneth. But Kensho Ono, his voice actor, said at an official event that in the first film the "nice young man" face and the face he shows inside Mafty are far apart, and that playing both was hard.[6]
So don't think of Hathaway as
a man with a truly calm mind,
but as
a man whose skill at holding a calm face has become frighteningly good.
Young Lane, on the other hand, lets his pride and impatience show, so the contrast is sharp.
6. Did Gigi and Kenneth sleep together? The first film doesn't settle it
They stand close, and Kenneth talks like a grown-up man of the world, so it's easy to wonder.
But from the first film and the official profiles alone, you can't say for sure that anything physical happened. What the official material does confirm is that after the Davao air raid Gigi stays with Kenneth for a while, and that the two are strongly aware of each other.[4][5]
The second film also brings in another woman, Mace Flower. She is a Haunzen flight attendant who moves from Hong Kong to the Davao base at Kenneth's request.[7]
So when you look back on those scenes later, don't mix up Gigi and Mace.
And when Kenneth says early on that women don't make his heart race like they used to, that doesn't mean he's retired from romance. It's just his way of showing he won't get flustered like a kid.
7. What's the difference between a mobile suit and a Gundam? Think "car" versus "one particular model"
For beginners, a rough rule is plenty:
Mobile suit = the big category of humanoid weapons.
Gundam = one particular machine, line, or name inside that category.
So the Xi Gundam is a Gundam and a mobile suit. The Messer is a mobile suit but not a Gundam.
Penelope is the slightly tricky one. In the official setting, an Odysseus Gundam fitted with the FF unit is called Penelope.[8]
So the big white monster across from Xi doesn't sound like a Gundam, but underneath it's very much a Gundam.
And the Xi Gundam isn't a sealed legendary machine being set free. It's a brand-new fifth-generation mobile suit built by Anaheim, which Mafty gets ready for its operation and receives as cargo.[9]
Not a legend breaking its seal. A top-secret new car being delivered.
8. What is the red-haired woman picking up in space? A 26-meter Gundam delivery
The cargo Emeralda handles in space has the Xi Gundam inside.
The Xi Gundam is over 26 meters tall to the top of its head, and its arms are bigger than a standard mobile suit's.[9]
In space there are no buildings or people to compare against, so the crate looks small. But the crate is huge too, of course.
Put simply:
Package: the latest Gundam
Size: about an 8-story building
Pickup point: partway down from space
Later, Gawman moves toward the Xi in midair, and it looks so smooth that you think, "Wait, are we still in space?"
We aren't. It's inside the atmosphere, and gravity applies.
If you want it to work in real life, what matters is less the height than the relative speed. You have to assume the Xi matched Gawman's falling speed very closely, so the gap between them was small. Otherwise that veteran would never survive it.
Even a veteran pilot doesn't get fall-damage resistance as a separate skill tree.
9. The young rival is Lane, and "a Gundam movie with hardly any Gundam" is on purpose
Lane Aim, who pilots Penelope, is a lieutenant in the Earth Federation forces. He's an elite who was handed command of a unit at a young age, and he's also Penelope's development pilot.[3]
So for the final showdown, all you need is:
Hathaway + Xi Gundam = Mafty
versus
Lane + Penelope = Earth Federation
Only at this point does it turn into the simple "Gundam vs. Gundam-type machine" robot movie.
That's late.
Even though it's a Gundam movie, the main Gundam doesn't properly show up until near the end. Until then it's hijacking, hotels, Gigi, Kenneth, terrorism, street fighting, and double lives, nonstop.
So anyone who thought "my friend built a Xi Gundam model, so that robot must be in it the whole time" walks right into the trap.
On the toy shelf: Xi Gundam!
In the first half of the movie: relationships.
10. It's a theatrical anime trilogy, not a TV series, and the "Hathaway" you know from memes is half a different work
Hathaway is a trilogy of theatrical anime films. The first came out in 2021, and the second, The Sorcery of Circe, opened on January 30, 2026. As of September 2, 2026, no release date has been announced for the third.[1][10]
The theme song of the first film is "Senkou" ("Flash") by [Alexandros].[10]
But the famous internet video with the pumpkin-headed dancer and the chaotic screen is not the film's actual end credits.
If you know the meme first, the song kicks in and you think:
"Here it comes... that screen!"
Then normal end credits roll.
It never comes.
That's when you realize you've been watching an internet-made version of Hathaway for years.
11. The short version: watch it as a drama about hiding who you are, not as a robot movie
The fastest way into the first film isn't memorizing every machine name.
First, lock in just this:
Federation = Kenneth and Lane
Mafty = Hathaway, Gawman, and their people
Gigi = outside both groups
Once you do, Gawman's quick glance, the oddly friendly bond between Kenneth and Hathaway, and Gigi's different screen temperature all click together.
And you can see why the Gundam barely shows up until late.
In the first film, the most dangerous thing, before any beam rifle, is Kenneth saying out loud:
"You're Mafty, aren't you?"
The giant robot is over 26 meters tall.
But the biggest bomb in the room is still Hathaway's ID card.
