Description: Snapchat says it won't automatically delete your Memories for staying on the free plan. Starting in January 2027, some older Memories will be archived: still stored, but no longer fully viewable without upgrading or exporting them.

Your Snapchat Memories are not set for a mass deletion in 2027. Snap's updated support guidance says that, from January 2027, some older files above its free-storage allowance will move into an archive. They'll remain on Snapchat, but opening them in the app may require a paid storage plan.

Why a 5GB limit feels bigger than 5GB

Memories isn't just a folder of disposable Snaps. For some people, it's years of birthdays, school trips and videos they never saved elsewhere. In a February 2026 Reddit post, one user said their archive had reached 23GB after using Snapchat since 2017. They wanted to keep every photo and asked how to save it all. That's a real individual concern, not evidence that everyone feels the same way.

Here's the unusual part of the rule. Snapchat says your oldest 5GB of Memories and Memories saved within the previous year will remain accessible. Starting in January 2027, older items outside those groups can be archived. You'll still see their thumbnails, but opening, editing or sharing an archived Memory in the app calls for a storage upgrade. Snapchat says it will notify affected users in-app before anything changes.

So the oldest photos can stay accessible while pictures from the years in between get filed away. Even nostalgia has somehow ended up with a complicated filing system.

How to keep a copy without a subscription

Snapchat provides an export route. Sign in at accounts.snapchat.com, open My Data, switch on Export your Memories, then choose Request Only Memories. Once the export is ready, download the ZIP file, extract it, open index.html and select Memories to save the images and videos. Large exports may take extra time. Check that your downloaded files actually open before removing anything from the app.

As of October 14, 2026, the distinction is clear: stored doesn't always mean immediately viewable. The next thing to watch is the in-app notice before archiving begins in January 2027. If those clips matter to you, keeping your own copy offers more control than hoping a thumbnail will be enough.
