The short answer
You bought something on a flea market app and it arrived broken. The number to look for is not "8 days." In Japan, online and mail-order sales do not have the general cooling-off rule that door-to-door sales have. For deals between private people, there is even less reason to expect a "free return within 8 days." On Yahoo! Flea Market, the official help says that once you have paid the seller, the system cannot cancel the order or refund you. You and the seller have to agree on a return and a refund yourselves. If you cannot agree, contact the platform's support team or the Consumer Hotline 188. [1][2][3]
Why does "8 days" keep coming up?
Japanese consumer law uses the number "8 days" in more than one rule.
Door-to-door sales and phone sales have an 8-day cooling-off period. Mail-order and online sales do not have that same general rule. But if a business's online shop does not state its return policy, a rule about returns within 8 days of receiving the goods can come into play. On flea market apps, you also need to check two more things: is the seller really a private person, or basically a business? And what do the platform's terms say? [2]
So the thinking "I bought it online, it's broken, I have 8 days!" jumps ahead too fast. Legally, you can easily land in the wrong place.
On Yahoo! Flea Market, things change once you have paid
Yahoo! Flea Market's official help says this. If the item is not what the listing described, or it is broken, first tell the seller what happened in the transaction messages. If you have not yet confirmed receipt and have not yet paid the seller, you still have options on the platform, such as asking for more time to pay or asking support for help. [1]
After you have paid the seller, it is different. The official guidance says the system cannot cancel or refund the order. You have to arrange a refund method, such as a bank transfer, directly with the seller. [1]
One point matters here. "Yahoo!'s system can't refund you" does not mean "you have no claim as a buyer." The first is a limit of what the platform can do. The second depends on the contract, the item description, who the seller is, and what kind of fault it is.
After you have paid, evidence helps more than anger
Take photos or a video of the damage. Save the item description, the listing photos, the messages, and the condition of the package when it arrived. Then tell the seller exactly when and how you used it, and what did not work.
It is a strong message if you can write things like these:
- The same problem happens every time I turn it on
- The listing said it worked normally
- You could not see it by looking, and I only found it the first time I used it
- I would like to return it and get a refund
Writing "This is terrible! Scam!" may move a person. But a video showing the problem and a screenshot of the item description will move both the seller and the support team.
If it is still not solved, call 188
The Consumer Hotline 188 is run by Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency. It connects you to a consumer center near you. The advice is free. You pay the phone charge once you are connected. [3]
In deals between private people, consumer law may not apply as simply as it does to deals with businesses. Even so, you can ask the hotline to help you sort out the facts, check whether the seller is really a business, and think about what to try next.
A practical checklist
- Save the fault in photos or video.
- Save the item description and the listing photos.
- If you have not yet confirmed receipt, do not rush to confirm. Check whether you can ask for more time to pay, and ask support.
- If you have already paid, talk to the seller directly about the return and refund.
- Write it short and clear: what is wrong, how it differs from the description, and what you want.
- Check whether the platform has its own protection program.
- If you are stuck, call 188.
Conclusion
A faulty flea market item is not solved by one magic number like "8 days." What you need to look at is who the other side is, whether you have paid, the platform's rules, your evidence, and which ways to settle the dispute are still open.
Before you get lost in the cooling-off maze, open the transaction screen and your evidence folder. It is faster.
