You paid for ChatGPT Plus, opened the Android app to pick a deeper-thinking level, and there is no Medium and no High in a normal chat.
Weird part: Work runs fine in the same app. And when you log into the same account in a browser, Medium and High are right there.
You've already updated the app, logged out and back in, cleared the cache, cleared the app data, and even uninstalled and reinstalled. Nothing changed.
At this point it's fair to ask your phone what it's hiding. But you've actually narrowed things down a lot.
If High shows up in normal Chat on the web with the same account, your Plus access for Chat is working. If only the Android app lacks the picker, you can stop hunting for a mistake in your phone settings.
Below: what's confirmed, what isn't, and when to stop fixing the app and use the web or Work instead.
1. Quick answer: if High shows on the web, Plus is basically fine
Here's how to read what you're seeing:

As of September 13, 2026, OpenAI's help pages say Plus includes Medium and High for GPT-5.6 Sol. Extra High and Pro are not part of Plus.[1]
The mobile app is also supposed to let you switch between Chat and Work at the top of the screen, and the reasoning-level picker for normal Chat is described as part of the mobile interface.[2][3]
So if the web shows High but the app doesn't, "I subscribed but don't have access" doesn't really fit.
2. Plus tops out at High — that's normal
After checking the web, the next worry is usually:
"I only see up to High. Is something missing?"
No, that's how Plus works.
As of September 13, 2026, the reasoning options in normal Chat break down roughly like this:[1]
- Plus: Medium, High
- Pro: Medium, High, Extra High, plus Pro-class models
- Free and Go: no Medium or High for GPT-5.6 Sol
So if you can see High on Plus, nothing is missing. You've opened every chest in the dungeon; there's no hidden fourth floor to hunt for.
3. What was tried — and didn't fix it
On the Android side, these common fixes were tried in order:
- Check that the ChatGPT app is up to date
- Fully close the app
- Log out and back into the same account
- Clear the cache
- Clear the app data and log in again
- Uninstall the app
- Reinstall it from the Play Store
Medium and High still didn't appear in normal Chat.
That's the key point. Cache clearing didn't help, so you clear the cache again. Reinstalling didn't help, so you reinstall a second time and hope. That's not troubleshooting anymore, that's grinding.
Since High works on the web with the same account, repeatedly wiping data on the phone is unlikely to change anything. The fixes you can do yourself have mostly been used up.
4. What does "Work works" actually tell you?
When Work runs in the Android app, it's tempting to say "so my Plus is totally fine."
That's half right. It helps to be a bit more careful.
OpenAI describes Chat, Work, and Codex as separate things for separate jobs:[2]
- Chat: questions, searching, brainstorming, everyday back-and-forth
- Work: research, analysis, multi-step jobs, and finished documents, spreadsheets, slides, and reports
- Codex: writing code, debugging, testing, working with repositories
So Work running doesn't, by itself, prove that the Medium/High picker in normal Chat is displaying correctly. They are different screens.
But here, normal Chat on the web does show Medium and High. Put those together and it gets convincing:
- Work access: yes
- Medium/High in web Chat: yes
- Normal Chat in the Android app only: picker not showing
That points fairly clearly at how the Android app displays normal Chat.
5. We can't name the exact cause
Don't jump from the symptom to a cause.
OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol and the new reasoning picker are rolling out gradually to eligible accounts.[1]
So the possibilities include:
- a display bug in the Android app
- the account and the mobile screen being updated at different times
- differences in rollout timing
- a mix of a particular app version and a particular phone
But this case can't tell you whether it's a slow rollout or a bug on one phone.
What was confirmed is simpler:
With the same account, the web had High, the Android app's normal Chat didn't show it, and the main resets changed nothing.
That's as far as this article goes.
6. A checking order that's enough
If you see the same thing, go in this order.
A. Open the web version with the same account
If Medium and High are missing on the web too, check your account, plan, and rollout status first.
If the web has Medium and High, your normal Chat access itself works.
B. Update the Android app
Rule out an old version first.
C. Log out, log in, and clear the cache
These are cheap, so try them.
D. If needed, clear the data and reinstall
This resets most of what the app stores on your phone.
E. If only the web works, stop tinkering with the phone
This is the important one.
Repeating a fix that doesn't work ten times doesn't make it ten times more likely to work.
Use High on the web, or switch to Work depending on the job. If you want the app issue looked at, send OpenAI support a summary of the steps you already tried.
7. If you don't code, Work can take over most heavy tasks
The practical call here was simple:
"If I'm not using Codex, why not just use Work for the heavy stuff?"
That's a reasonable move.
OpenAI itself positions Work for long, multi-step jobs and finished deliverables.[2]
For example:
- researching and comparing several sources
- analyzing long documents
- finishing a report
- making documents or spreadsheets
- working through a multi-stage task
As of September 13, 2026, OpenAI also says Plus can use GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex.[1][2]
Still, Work is not the same as High in normal Chat.
Work is a separate, agent-style workspace, and its usage limits are counted separately from Chat.[2]
Want a regular conversation with more thinking? Use High on the web.
Want it to research, run several steps, and hand you a finished product? Use Work.
That split makes more sense.
8. You don't have to use Codex
Codex sounds powerful, so it's tempting to tap it.
But OpenAI describes it as mainly for software development.[2]
- writing code
- fixing bugs
- running tests
- running commands
- working with repositories
If none of that is your job, there's no reason to go to Codex for ordinary research or document work.
You don't need a lathe just to turn a screw.
If you don't code, Chat plus Work covers a lot of ground.
9. The easiest way to set things up for now
Until the app shows the picker, this split is realistic.
Quick questions and casual chat
Normal Chat in the Android app.
Normal Chat where you want deeper thinking
Open the web version and pick High.
If you add it to your home screen from Chrome, you won't have to look for the URL every time.
Research, analysis, long tasks, and finished documents
Work in the Android app.
Coding
Codex, only if you need it.
This way you're never stuck waiting for a High button to appear in the Android app.
10. FAQ
Is it because my Android phone is old?
This case can't say. If High works on the web with the same account, the app is up to date, and the main resets are done, there's little reason to blame the phone's age.
If Work works, is Plus working?
Your Work access is in place. But Chat and Work are separate, so Work alone doesn't prove the picker in normal Chat. If High also shows in web Chat, as here, your Plus access to normal Chat is confirmed too.
Is it a bug that I only get up to High on Plus?
No. That's normal for Plus. Extra High and Pro aren't part of Plus.[1]
Should I reinstall one more time?
If you've already cleared the data and reinstalled with the same result, it's low priority. Checking whether you can use it another way tells you more.
Is Work a replacement for High?
Not completely. High is a thinking-level setting in normal Chat; Work is a separate mode for multi-step jobs. For heavy research or building a deliverable, though, Work may end up being the better fit.
11. Summary: it may not be "I paid and the feature is missing" — just the door is hidden
If Medium and High don't show in normal Chat on Android, you don't need to conclude right away that Plus isn't active.
Open the same account on the web first.
If Medium and High show up there, your Plus access to normal Chat works.
If Work works too, you even have a way out for heavy tasks.
If you've updated, logged in again, cleared the cache and data, and reinstalled, and only the app is still off, it's faster to split things up than to keep fiddling with the phone:
app Chat for light conversation, web High for deeper normal chat, Work for heavy jobs.
The feature isn't gone. It's like having the gear but not seeing the equipment screen — so use a different screen to equip it.
That's enough to get by until the app is fixed.
