Aso is offering ¥5,000 off a hotel night plus a ¥2,000 local coupon. That sounds like a reason to book right now.
The day itself looks great too: the Kusasenri grasslands, the top of Mt. Aso, the volcano museum, Aso's akaushi (red cattle) beef, the Daikanbo lookout and a hot spring.
Then you price the flights for September 24–25, and the picture changes.
If you are flying from Nagoya's Chubu Centrair Airport, the hotel is not the big cost. Getting to Kumamoto is. The ¥5,000 you save on the room can disappear in the airfare, and a rental car can make it worse.
So is the Aso discount worth it? This article uses prices and rules as of September 7, 2026 to show where the trip gets expensive, why Fukuoka and Kagoshima are cheaper ways in, and what changes when the bigger Kyushu discount starts in October.
1. What you can actually do in Aso
Aso is a good destination on its own. A one-night trip usually looks like this:
- Kusasenri-ga-hama grassland
- The top of Mt. Aso
- Aso Volcano Museum
- Akaushi beef
- Daikanbo lookout
- A hot spring
Kusasenri-ga-hama is a grassland of about 785,000 square meters, where you can walk with cattle and horses and look toward Nakadake.[1]
Daikanbo looks out over the whole Aso caldera. The five Aso peaks lie across the horizon in a shape people call the "sleeping Buddha."[2]
One thing to know before you go: as of September 7, Mt. Aso is at Volcanic Alert Level 2. Entry is restricted within about 1 km of the Nakadake First Crater, so you cannot view the crater. The road to the summit plaza is open.[3][4]
So plan this trip around the grasslands, the volcanic scenery and the caldera view, not the crater rim.
2. Want a nice Kyushu lunch? Try Kumamoto Station
You can eat akaushi in Aso and be perfectly happy. If you would also like a proper Kyushu meal at a hotel, there is an option.
Senzan Bansui, a Kyushu creative restaurant at THE BLOSSOM KUMAMOTO, serves mostly Japanese dishes made with ingredients from the mountains and seas of Kyushu. Lunch is from 11:00 to 14:30.[5]
It is right next to Kumamoto Station, so it is easy to fit in on a day you spend in Kumamoto city.
If you go straight from Kumamoto Airport to Aso, though, the station is a bit out of the way. Restaurants also eat up travel time, so on a tight trip, skip it and have the akaushi in Aso.
3. The September Aso discount really is good
Aso City's recovery discount applies to stays from September 7 to September 30, 2026.[6]
If the room costs ¥10,000 or more before tax per person per night, you get ¥5,000 off. If it costs ¥5,000 to under ¥10,000, you get ¥2,000 off. On top of that you get a ¥2,000 local coupon.[6]
There is a catch: you must book directly with the hotel. Bookings through sites such as Rakuten Travel or Jalan, or through a travel agency, do not qualify.[6]
There is a second catch, and it matters more.
Even while the campaign is running, an individual hotel may have run out of its share.
4. Aso Plaza Hotel: the campaign is still on, but its own quota is gone
Aso Plaza Hotel started taking bookings for the Aso discount on September 1. On September 5 it reached its budget limit and stopped accepting new ones.[7]
Guests who already booked with the discount keep it, along with the local coupon. New bookings from September 5 are at the regular price.[7]
When we searched for one person on September 24, rates started at ¥15,000 for room only, ¥17,000 with breakfast and ¥21,500 with two meals.
The price is not the only trap. An old page that says "participating hotel" tells you nothing about whether the discount is still available.
What you need to know is whether this hotel, on your date, booked the way the campaign requires, still has discounted rooms.
Otherwise you reach the last step expecting ¥5,000 off and see the regular price.
5. The real cost is the Chubu–Kumamoto flight
FDA (Fuji Dream Airlines) started Centrair–Kumamoto flights on March 29, 2026, with two round trips a day.[8]
A direct flight is very handy if Aso is your goal.
But this route has no true low-cost carrier pushing prices down.
On September 7, a comparison site showed the lowest September fare from Centrair to Kumamoto at ¥13,560 one way, and the same for Kumamoto to Centrair.[9][10]
Even if you add up those two lowest-of-the-month prices, you get ¥27,120. On September 24–25, flights at convenient times can cost more.
Then add the hotel, local transport, meals and admission fees.
To fit Kusasenri, Daikanbo and a hot spring into one trip, a car helps a lot, and that means rental fees and fuel.
You can save ¥5,000 on the hotel and lose more than that on the flight.
6. September 24–25: Fukuoka and Kagoshima are cheaper to fly into
Compare the same dates and the gap is clear.
As of September 7, Centrair to Fukuoka on September 24 was ¥7,736, and Fukuoka to Centrair on September 25 was ¥7,788. The round trip comes to ¥15,524.[11][12]
Centrair to Kagoshima on September 24 was ¥9,634, and Kagoshima to Aichi on September 25 was ¥11,783. The round trip comes to ¥21,417.[13][14]
Kumamoto's lowest fares of the month already add up to ¥27,120 round trip, so Fukuoka is more than ¥10,000 cheaper.
A great hotel discount in Kumamoto can still lose to the airfare. Which airport you choose can decide the whole budget.
7. Flying from Nagoya to Kyushu: Fukuoka is the cheapest, thanks to Jetstar
In the 2026 summer schedule, Jetstar Japan flies Centrair–Fukuoka three times a day.[15]
From Centrair, Fukuoka is the only Kyushu city where a true low-cost carrier clearly competes on price.
Kagoshima is served by Skymark and Solaseed Air, and fares are often low there. But they are not true LCCs in the same sense as Jetstar.[15]
Kumamoto is served by FDA, Miyazaki by airlines such as Solaseed Air, and Oita by IBEX-group carriers. They can have cheap fares at times, but none of them works like Jetstar in Fukuoka.
Here is the short version:

Fukuoka is not cheap just because it is in Kyushu.
It is cheap because more flights and more competition, including LCCs, hold prices down.
8. Why Sapporo is sometimes cheaper than Kumamoto
Strangely, on some days a flight to Sapporo is cheaper than one to Kumamoto.
If you only look at distance, that makes no sense.
But Centrair added many Hokkaido flights in summer 2026, up to 19 a day to Sapporo. ANA added more flights in September, and Spring Japan began flying the route on April 23.[16][17]
So prices follow how many seats are sold and how many airlines compete, not how far you go.
Flights are not priced like train fares, where a longer trip costs more.
With more airlines and more seats, plus some cheap seats left, a farther city like Sapporo can cost less than Kumamoto.
Airfare depends on what is left to sell, not on distance.
9. Cheap flight to Fukuoka, then on to Aso: does it work?
A natural idea comes up here.
"If Fukuoka costs about ¥15,000, why not fly there and go on to Aso?"
On price alone, that is a sound plan.
But on a one-night trip you add a ground journey from Fukuoka to Aso and back. What you save on the flight goes into travel time and ground transport costs.
With two nights or more, it gets worth considering. If you squeeze Kusasenri, Daikanbo and a hot spring into one night, you spend a lot of the trip moving.
A trip budget is not only yen. It includes the hours you actually have.
Via Fukuoka is cheaper.
Direct to Kumamoto is faster.
Which one is better depends on how many days you have.
10. Fixed on September 24–25? Chiran and Kagoshima work well
Looking only at September 24–25, the Kagoshima round trip at ¥21,417 is lighter than Kumamoto.[13][14]
If you fly into Kagoshima Airport and head toward Chiran, Kagoshima itself is your destination. You also avoid the long ride to another prefecture that the Fukuoka route requires.
So for a one-night trip in late September, cheap flights to Kagoshima can beat the hotel discount in Aso.
If you pick a destination by discount rate alone, you can end up paying ¥10,000 more for a flight to reach a hotel that is ¥5,000 off.
That is a transport cost dressed up as a coupon.
11. From October 1, the rules change
Japan's Tourism Agency plans the "Kyushu Recovery Support Discount" for stays from October 1, 2026.[18]
It supports 50% of travel and lodging costs across Kyushu, and 60% in Kumamoto and Kagoshima prefectures. The caps per person per trip are ¥20,000 for lodging alone or a one-night package with transport, ¥30,000 for a package with transport and two or more nights, and ¥35,000 for a trip covering two or more prefectures.[18]
This changes how Aso looks.
In September, the hotel is cheaper but the flight is expensive.
In October, if a qualifying package goes on sale, the Kumamoto trip itself could be 60% off.
If packages with flights are included, the biggest weak point in September, transport cost, can be covered by the discount too.
But as of September 7, Kumamoto Prefecture had not announced booking start dates or product details.[18]
So the October discount is strong, but there is not yet a 60%-off product you can book.
12. Conclusion: in September choose the airport, in October choose the discount
Aso is a great place to go. Kusasenri, the volcanic landscape, akaushi, Daikanbo and a hot spring pack a lot into one night.
The September Aso discount is worth it if your hotel still has some left.[6]
But popular hotels such as Aso Plaza Hotel use up their share early.[7]
And from Centrair, Kumamoto has no true LCC, so the flight tends to push up the total.[8][9]
For a short trip like September 24–25, Fukuoka wins on price, and Kagoshima balances a direct flight with sightseeing. Going to Kumamoto means paying for the convenience of reaching Aso directly.
From October 1, the Kyushu Recovery Support Discount plans to cover 60% in Kumamoto and Kagoshima, so waiting for Aso looks worth it.[18]
The number to compare is not how many yen the hotel takes off.
It is the total: flights, local transport, hotel, meals and the time you have.
For the hotel alone, Aso is cheaper.
Count the airport, and Fukuoka or Kagoshima takes the lead.
Then October arrives, and Aso comes back strong.
Comparing trips is more of a contest than you would think.
